GRU reports sewage spill in southwest Gainesville on Sunday

Staff report

Aging equipment was blamed for a break in a sewage line that spilled 20,000 gallons onto the ground at 4200 SW 20th Avenue in Gainesville on Sunday night.

Gainesville Regional Utility was notified of the forcemain break at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Crews worked through the night to restore proper waterwater flow and clean up the area, according to a news release on Monday.

A vacuum truck was able to collect about 15,000 gallons but 5,000 gallons flowed into drainage ditches and was absorbed into the ground, according to GRU.

"The cause of the break is aging infrastructure," according to the release.

The sewage normally flows to the Kanapaha Water Reclamation Facility.
