Vero Beach High School seniors (from left) Chris In, 17, and Logan Votzi, 18, volunteer during spring break, to help make shell bags, on Monday, March 18, 2019, along the shore of the Indian River Lagoon at the southwest corner of the 17th Street Alma Lee Loy Bridge behind the water treatment plant, during the Ocean Research & Conservation Association's (ORCA) shell bagging day for the Living Lagoon Program. The program is about actively restoring the Indian River Lagoon through habitat restoration and education. The shell bags are used to make breakwaters offshore from areas impacted by wave erosion in Indian River County. "I got to this through Harbor Branch, I was an intern there and they were talking about this, how they put these [shell bags] off [shore] to counteract all the wake coming in from the channels," Votzi said. "It's just to help the onshore nurseries, blocking the erosion." The project is funded with an Indian River County Impact 100 grant, to be completed by the end of May. Volunteering opportunities for the program happen several time a month. Information on how to volunteer can be found at www.teamorca.com.
