Looking for current information on the condition of Florida's waters?

ProtectingFloridaTogether.gov — introduced by Gov. Ron DeSantis Tuesday morning at Florida Oceanographic Society's Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island in Stuart — might be a good resource.

Eventually. But not yet.

Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees speaks at a news conference where Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a new website that features information on South Florida water conditions on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at the Florida Oceanographic Society's Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island in Stuart.

MoreFlorida governor announces new water website, but data is old, misleading, expert says

The site is designed to provide Floridians with information about water conditions such as blue-green algae or red tide blooms, what is being done to fix these problems and how the public can help. The governor's office, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Health and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have collaborated on the project.

Just one problem: Some of the science posted on the website is dated and misleading, TCPalm environmental reporter Tyler Treadway confirmed. For example, some water samples posted for select lakes and rivers are three to six months old. This despite the fact the water samples are available monthly or, in some cases, in real time through the use of remote-controlled monitors.

And at least one graphic on the website, depicting the concentration of phosphorus on Lake Okeechobee, was misleading.

ProtectingFloridaTogether.gov is a great idea. However, it clearly needs some work.
