May 11 'Save Our Water' summit promises to be engaging and educational

The News-Press staff

The News-Press, Naples Daily News and USA Today Network-Florida are proud to once again bring to Southwest Florida the 'Save Our Water' summit.

Panelists answer questions at the News-Press 'Save Our Water' summit held at the Sanibel Harbour Marrito Resort & Spa in October 2016. The second 'Save Our Water' summit is May 11 at the Hyatt Regency at Coconut Point.

The event is going to take place on May 11 at the Hyatt Regency at Coconut Point in Bonita Springs and will feature expert speakers, timely presentations and a panel of key stakeholders who are focused on the state of water quality in this region and beyond.

Among the speakers will be representatives from the South Florida Water Management District, FGCU, Lee County, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Council and the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council.

Among the topics planned to be addressed are:

►Updates on a variety of projects, including the C-43 reservoir in Hendry County, the Herbert Hoover Dike restoration, what is going on in the Everglades with the Picayune Strand and more.

►Hurricane Irma: Lessons we learned

►Estuaries report card

►What we can do in our own backyards and neighborhoods to improve water quality

►How citizens, organizations, scientists, local governments, and the private sector can work together to improve what the United Nations refers to as Water Security: from drinking water, to climate change, to healthy ecosystems, to economic development.

Also, The News-Press environment team — reporter Chad Gillis, photographer Andrew West and editor Steve McQuilkin — will provide their unique insights into how the water flows down the state from the head of the Kissimmee River to Lake Okeechobee and on to the Caloosahatchee River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico.

Gillis and West embarked on a 10-day journey in late January, paddling their canoe over a 100-plus mile stretch of waterways, observing conditions and the wildlife, and interviewing people along the way. A documentary-style video will be part of their presentation.

There will be a moderated panel at the end of the event with the focus on solutions and what’s next.

Attendees will also be invited to participate in a pre-event Water Quality Fair that will feature organizations and businesses dedicated to preserving the quality of our water in Southwest Florida.

This is the second 'Save Our Water' summit hosted by The News-Press, Naples Daily News and USA Today Network-Florida. The first took place in October 2016 at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa.

The News-Press Market Watch Save Our Water summit is Wednesday.
