SARASOTA COUNTY — About 1,200 gallons of wastewater was discharged during work on a pipe near Venice on Thursday, the state reports.

According to a Florida Department of Environmental Protection report, an iron wastewater pipe near the 700 block of Woodbridge Drive had deteriorated. While a Sarasota County crew was replacing the pipe with PVC components, 1,200 gallons of wastewater was discharged at about noon.

About 800 gallons was recovered. The discharge was contained in a stormwater structure and no waterways were affected.

This is the third incident in Sarasota County this month. On May 5 a lift station failure caused more than 5,000 gallons of raw sewage to spill into a pond. Nearly 800 gallons of raw sewage leaked into a neighborhood on May 2.

On Wednesday staffers told the County Commission that it would cost more than $300 million to upgrade three wastewater treatment plants.
