Sewer overflow releases more than 300,000 gallons of sewage near Boiling Brook Circle and I-10

From staff reports

Approximately 307,000 gallons of raw sewage were released during a sanitary sewer overflow near Boiling Brook Circle on Monday, according to the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority.

ECUA crews responded to a sewer odor complaint at 224 Boiling Brook Circle. When they arrived on scene, the crews determined the sewer smell was coming from the swampy area north of the address and south of Interstate 10.

The overflow was caused by a damaged sewer main, and crews stopped the sewage flow from the north by plugging the manhole at the south end of Coronet Drive and installing a holding tank.

The damaged sewer main is currently being repaired by Pensacola Concrete Construction, one of ECUA's approved contractors.

Bacteriological sampling has been initiated in the impacted areas, and in accordance with standard operating procedure, the ECUA notified the State Warning Point, the Escambia County Health Department and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection of the overflow.

According to local environmentalists, the site of the spill is close to the head waters of Carpenters Creek, a body already plagued by water quality issues. They advised citizens to exercise caution around nearby surface waters until testing is complete.
