Dixie County residents speak out on flooding at commission meeting

Residents dealing with groundwater flooding didn't hold back at Thursday night's Dixie County Commission meeting.

The meeting, held in the Board of County Commissioners room at the Dixie County Courthouse, was focused on finding solutions to groundwater flooding. The issue has plagued many residents of the county for weeks, and in some cases months.

Earlier this week, Dixie County Emergency Management officials confirmed at least half a dozen families have received aid from the Red Cross. Officials say the flooding stems from unprecedented amounts of rainfall between March and August of this year.

Representatives of the Suwannee River Water Management District were present to answer questions.

Concerns discussed ranged from how development, specifically agricultural, has affected natural water flow in the county, to ways in which residents can seek aid from the Red Cross.

The meeting got contentious when one county resident voiced his opposition to the additional presence of law enforcement in the room.

"I don't need them to cover my [expletive], I'll tell you that," said District Two Commissioner W.C. Mills while he engaged the man. "I'm dead serious about that."

Meanwhile, a boil water advisory remains in effect for Dixie County residents with well casings underwater on their property.
