State officials are cleaning up a 10,000-gallon wastewater spill that overflowed onto the bike path at Tom Brown Park on Thursday.

A city sewer contractor was working on a main pipe near Weems Road and installed a temporary bypass pump that failed, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The sewage spill was discovered at about 6 a.m. Thursday. Since then, an estimated 2,400 gallons has been recovered from the ditch where the wastewater overflowed.

Surrounding soil was sprayed with disinfectant and the area taped off to prevent any additional contact.
