A vehicle is blamed for a spill of more than 1,000 gallons of treated wastewater in Sarasota this month, the state reports.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, an unknown vehicle drove over a reclaimed water meter box in the 900 block of South Osprey Avenue on July 6. The vehicle broke part of a 2-inch pipe, and about 1,200 gallons of highly treated reclaimed water spilled. About 200 gallons of the highly treated effluent entered the stormwater collection system off of Lincoln Drive.

SPECIAL REPORT: Sewer Crisis in the State of Florida

No cleanup action was required because the effluent is treated by the city of Sarasota's advanced wastewater treatment facility.
