City commissioners to help fight beach erosion in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Saint Johns County Commissioners took new steps to help fight a growing concern- beach erosion at Porpoise Point near Vilano Beach.

Today commissioners approved a new two year-study by the Army Corp of Engineers to look into ways to solve erosion problems there and fix damage created by Hurricane Irma.

Commissioners met Tuesday to essentially start the process for the Army Corp of Engineers to look into ways to restore the sand, and possibly resolve flooding and drainage issues too. County records show this step is being taken since most of the affected area of Porpoise Point is on federal land.

“I think  the county is not doing enough, but we need something. They bring the sand in and it washes out before they get it in here,” Porpoise Point neighbor Janine Berry said.

County officials say the process with the Army Corp of Engineers eventually could cost the county $325,000.
