Dry conditions and low water levels prompt restrictions for Everglades

The view from an airboat in the Everglades National Park on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015. The park is a popular destination for Collier County airboaters to fish, swim, and race airboats.

Dry conditions and low water levels prompted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to issue restrictions on motorized vehicles in the Everglades.

The FWC's executive order covers a portion of the Everglades and the Francis S.Taylor Wildlife Management Area designated as Water Conservation Area 3A North. The special regulations are effective immediately and restrict motorized vehicles, including swamp buggies and airboats, from operating in the restricted areas.

"This action is necessary because during dry conditions, the use of vehicles and airboats can start wildfires," an FWC press release says. "The FWC is restricting access in this area to protect both people and natural resources."

While the restrictions are in place, boat ramps and canals will stay open to allow public access for fishing and recreation.

The restrictions will remain until the FWC releases a subsequent executive order.

Keep up to date with the restrictions and reopening on FWC's website.
