DESTIN — Crews responded to a sewage leak in a gated Miramar Beach neighborhood on Sunday morning.

According to a press release from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, at 10:45 a.m. Sunday personnel at South Walton Utility Company, Inc. got a call about a manhole overflowing at 304 Tequesta Drive, in the Emerald Lakes subdivision.

Once on site, SWUCI personnel determined that the raw sewage pump station's control unit had faulted out, not allowing the pumps to start normally. Workers were able to start the pumps and contain the sewage.

An estimated 500 gallons of raw sewage escaped from a total of five manholes.

The FDEP said none of the raw sewage reached surface waters. The area around the manholes had lime applied and were washed down, and the raw sewage still on the ground was vacuumed up by a utility vacuum truck.
