Former Port St. Lucie mayor Bob Minsky has died at 84

Robert Minsky, 84, a two-time former mayor of Port St. Lucie, died Saturday, according to his family.

Minsky served as Port St. Lucie's mayor from 1992 until 1998 and again from 2000 until 2006. He was known for his passionate advocacy for the young city.

Starting early in his tenure as mayor, Minsky was a a staunch supporter of building a central water and sewer system and the Crosstown Parkway project to provide another east-west corridor in the city.

The water and sewer project was designed to attract more economic development to a city where most residents were on wells and septic tanks. The water and sewer system was completed in 2006. The final stretch of the Crosstown Parkway corridor is now under construction.

Minsky also was an advocate of the original City Center project, a public-private partnership with Jupiter developer George DiGuardiola on Walton Road and U.S. 1. 

Minsky was a frequent contributor of opinion columns and letters to the editor in his retirement.

Private funeral services were held Wednesday.
