Thousands of gallons of sewage spill in Sarasota County after pipe cracks

A Florida Department of Environmental Protection map shows the site of a sewage spill on Thursday in Sarasota County.

Several thousand gallons of raw sewage spilled on Thursday in Sarasota County and thousands of gallons were recovered, the state reported.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, county crews responded at about 11:30 a.m. to a report of a broken pipe in the 2500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A crack was found in a 12-inch sewer pipe. The pipe was isolated and repaired.

About 7,000 gallons of sewage spilled onto the area and into a nearby ditch that leads to a canal. Crews recovered about 25,000 gallons of sewage mixed with stormwater.

Water samples were taken and the site will be cleaned according to protocol.
